Rabat – A survey by the Economic, Social, and Environmental council (EESC) has shown that more than half of Moroccans practice sport regularly.
The EESC carried out the survey from March 4–27 on the “Ouchariko” platform.
The survey established that 12% of respondents participate in sports competitions.
Meanwhile, nearly 30% of the total number of respondents affirm to rarely practice sports.
Nearly 891 people participated in the survey, including 887 respondents, according to the official website of the survey.
The results of the EESC questionnaire shows that 64% of respondents consider athletics as one of the sports that public policies should target, followed by football (60%) and basketball (43%).
On the other hand, equestrian sports and golf were considered as sports that should be less focused on by policies.
The survey also focused on the reasons that prevent Moroccans from attending more sports events, citing ticketing, security, and infrastructure challenges.
According to the EESC, more than 50% of respondents claimed to be unsatisfied with access to local sports fields, as well as the level of sports played in Morocco.
Nearly 65.5% declared security issues in stadiums as the main reason not to attend sports activities, meanwhile 31% of the people justify their lack of athletic activity by citing a lack of interest in sports.
Talent identification was also a matter raised by this survey.
About 54% of the respondents believe that identifying athletic talent should be done at school level, while 20% believe that it should be done at the community level.
Meanwhile, only 10% of people who participated in the survey indicate that talent identification should be carried out at the club level.
According to the EESC, the idea behind the survey is to propose avenues of transformation to increase the contribution of sports in the creation of wealth and employment, “and make it an economic and social engine for Morocco.” The EESC will take the results of this consultation into account as it attempts to develop “an economy of sport in Morocco.”
