Rabat – Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska has described Morocco as a “strategic and trustworthy” neighbor.
The comments came as Grande-Marlaska visited the construction site of Zaragoza’s new federal police facility. He added that Spain and Morocco share shared issues.
The minister went on to describe the relations between the two countries as “important and all-encompassing,” referring to the cultural, economic, political, and security areas where they share many common interests.
Grande-Marlaska cited the Operation Marhaba 2022 as an example of the cooperation between the neighboring countries, affirming that the cooperation between the two have garnered “total satisfaction” from Spain.
Grande-Marlaska recently met with his Moroccan counterpart Abdelouafi Leftit, where the two ministers expressed their happiness with the cooperation between the two countries, and Marlaska reiterated Spain’s desire to strengthen those relationships.
“Our relations with Morocco are extremely loyal, reliable, and fraternal,” Grande-Marlaska told the press on Tuesday.
Relations between Rabat and Madrid have seen positive developments in recent months after Spain voiced its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan to resolve the Sahara dispute in March.
The new stance from Madrid marked the end of a tense diplomatic crisis between the two countries, and ushered in what officials called “a new era” for cooperation between the two Mediterranean neighbors.
Since then, relations were further strengthened through official visits of Spanish politicians to Morocco, including one by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who met with King Mohammed VI.
