Fez – After being crowned winners of the 2022 Arab Futsal Cup yesterday, Morocco’s Atlas Lions have risen to the ninth position worldwide in the latest World Futsal Ranking published today.

Morocco reasserted this week its dominance in the Arab futsal scene by retaining its regional crown after a standout campaign that saw it defeat the best teams in the Arab world.

Thanks to this impressive participation in the regional competition, the Moroccan team now ranks first in the African futsal scene, far ahead of its closest contestant, Egypt (ranked 33rd worldwide). Following are Kuwait (ranked 41st), Libya (43rd), and Angola (46th).

With a total of 1441 points, Morocco’s futsal team has also outranked many other elite teams worldwide, such as Italy (10th), Colombia (12th), and France (19th).

This flattering world ranking didn’t come out of the blue, as the Moroccan futsal squad has in recent years been displaying eye-catching performances against some of the world’s biggest teams.

The team made a lasting impression in the 2021 Futsal World Cup despite playing against tough, competitive opponents.

In particular, the Atlas Lions caught the world’s attention by beating Venezuela 3-2 and drawing against Portugal 3-3.

Unfortunately, Brazil, arguably the world’s best  futsal team, stood in the way of Morocco’s history-making momentum by defeating the Atlas Lions 1-0 in an entertaining, tense quarter-final match.

In this year’s Arab Futsal Cup, Morocco’s team made history by winning the regional title for the second time in a row.

In a tight group-deciding game against Kuwait, the Moroccan team put on a great display by winning 6-4 and topping Group A.

The team’s performance was even more remarkable against Somalia with a landslide 16-0 win.

In the third game against Mauritania, the Moroccan team once again proved its caliber by handily defeating its Mauritanian opponents 13-0 victory.

In the quarter-finals, Morocco’s Atlas Lions beat Libya 3-0 as they moved to the semi-finals against Egypt. And they went on to win the highly-anticipated semi-final game with a convincing 5-2 victory.

Most Moroccan fans saw the final as the icing on the cake that would cement Morocco’s dominance of futsal in the Arab world.

The team met their fans’ demands as they succeeded in retaining their regional crown by defeating Iraq 3-0 in the final.
