Rabat – Top security officials from Morocco and Germany met in Rabat on Friday to discuss ways to boost security cooperation.
General Director of Morocco’s National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST) Abdellatif Hammouchi held a high-level security meeting with the General Director of Germany’s Federal Police Dieter Romann on Friday in Rabat.
A statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said Hammouchi received his German counterpart, who is on a working visit to explore security cooperation between Germany and Morocco.
The visit seeks to boost “bilateral cooperation mechanisms in the security field and strengthen the security partnership to serve the common interests of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Federal Republic of Germany,” DGSN said in its communique.
The two countries also seek to expand on expertise sharing in the field of counterterrorism and combatting different forms of organized crime.
During his visit, Roman stressed that the meeting with Hammouchi reflects the “German authority’s firm will to develop security cooperation” with Morocco.
The visit also serves as a “starting point” for boosting bilateral security partnership on “solid foundations based on credibility, trust, and common interest,” he added.
Germany also commended Morocco’s much-welcomed efforts and cooperation to tackle terrorism.
Morocco’s counterterrorism approach allowed the country to position itself among the safest countries in the world, according to the Global Terrorism Index 2022.
“Morocco’s active role in fighting terrorism suggests the country’s understanding of the threat; the interconnectedness of its counterterrorism methods,” the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP said in its Global Terrorism Index report in March.
In addition to Roman, Morocco’s Hammouchi also expressed his satisfaction with the cooperation with Germany. He emphasized the importance of international security cooperation to neutralize the risks associated with terrorism and organized crime.
Hammouchi also welcomed the German authority’s readiness to develop security cooperation in favor of stability and achieving a resolute response to security threats.
Morocco cooperates with different partners across the world in terms of sharing intelligence and expertise to tackle security threats.
Hammouchi held a series of meetings with different security officials recently to discuss means to intensify cooperation efforts against organized crime.
One of the latest meetings was in May between Hammouchi and Dutch Chief of Police Henk van Essen.
During the meeting, Morocco and the Netherlands signed a letter of intent to mirror the two countries’ shared desire to straighten security cooperation.
Hammouchi has also recently traveled to Qatar, where he met with Qatari security officials.
Reports emphasized that Qatar is interested in receiving thousands of security personnel from Morocco to help the Gulf country secure a successful organization of the 2022 World Cup.
