Rabat – Security services at Morocco’s Casablanca Port aborted an international drug trafficking operation on Wednesday, a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said.

Police seized over three tons and 200 kilograms of chira drug the traffickers were attempting to smuggle abroad. The police found the drugs “carefully” hidden inside a container meant for exporting consumable goods, according to DGSN’s statement.

The DGSN led the operation in collaboration with the costumes services, with the help of trained police dogs.

Security services have located the warehouse from which the seized drugs were shipped, and Casablanca’s judicial police authorities have opened an investigation to identify and arrest the people involved in the attempted drug smuggling operation.

Yesterday’s raid is a part of the Moroccan police’s efforts to further the country’s fight against transborder drug smuggling, added the statement.

The DGSN has carried out several similar operations to combat local and international drug trafficking networks.

Earlier this week, judicial police authorities in Casablanca arrested Noureddine B., a French drug lord of Algerian origin, following an international arrest warrant issued by French authorities.

The defendant, who was involved in several cocaine trafficking operations, was trying to enter Morocco through the Mohammed V International Airport but was stopped.

In April 2022, Moroccan police aborted an attempt to traffic 31 tons and 197 kilograms of Cannabis and Tangier.

In the same month, French security services dismantled a criminal network active in drug trafficking from Morocco to Spain and the Netherlands.
