Rabat – French security services have dismantled a criminal network active in drug trafficking from Morocco to Spain and the Netherlands.

AFP cited the Nancy Interregional Specialized Jurisdiction (JIRS), announcing the dismantling of the network.

French services arrested on Wednesday seven suspects involved with the drug trafficking networks.

Police arrested six of the suspects in several towns in Moselle, a department in eastern France, while the seventh was apprehended in Marseille.

The suspects are six men and one woman aged between 22 and 40.

Six of the suspects are in custody pending trial while one is under judicial supervision.

Police seized 132 kilograms of cannabis and €237,000 during the arrest operations.

French authorities opened an investigation into the network after an “anonymous report of a massive import of cannabis” that arrived by truck from Spain.

The truck was allegedly carrying hundreds of kilograms of cannabis with an estimated value of €1 million.

The suspects stored the drugs in Moselle, before dispatching them separately by members of the network.

In addition to the first seizure, police also seized 110 kilograms of cannabis in Moselle in a vehicle with a false plate.

The preliminary investigation found that a 24-year old suspect who lives between Moselle, Spain, and Morocco was responsible for importing the drugs.

The operation is part of coordinated intergovernmental efforts against drug trafficking. Morocco is one of the countries engaged in global efforts to tackle organized crimes, including drug trafficking.

Moroccan police handled 82,950 cases related to the possession and trafficking of drugs in 2021, referring 103,589 people to courts, including 261 foreigners.

Police in Morocco also seized in the past year 191 tons and 158 kilograms of cannabis, one of the most used drugs in Morocco.

According to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), the amount of hashish seized in Morocco this past year represents a decrease of 12% compared to 2020.
