Rabat – Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club’s coach Walid Regragui announced his departure from the team shortly after Thursday’s victory (2-0) against Raja Athletic Club.
After the remarkable match that allowed Wydad to qualify for the Throne Cup semifinals, Regragui said in a statement to the media, “I can’t do better with the team in the future. The players, the management, and the fans have put in great confidence and have given me the opportunity to win two significant titles.”
“I owe it to all the team members for the great support I have received during my stay here,” he added.
Wydad has been crowned the Third African Champions League title this season, and won the professional championship title for the second year in a row.
The Moroccan club is still competing for the Throne Cup and Super African Title and will also participate in the Club World Cup.
Regragui further explained that if the semifinals of the Throne Cup occur this season, he will be at the disposal of the team. If postponed to next year, however, Regragui will not be able to train the club.
“The players fought until the end of the season and helped me make it work,” he concluded.
In a recent interview with the Moroccan TV channel Arryadia, Regragui repeatedly expressed thoughts of leaving by the end of the season, as he does not believe he can “win the Botola or the Champions League with Wydad next season.”
“The WAC deserves to always be at the top of the rankings, that’s why I think it would be more interesting to call on a new coach, who can bring new life to the club,” he added.
The news led to a gloomy atmosphere among WAC fans, and many of them took to social media to express their great admiration for the coach who led the club to several victories in a span of only a year.
The African Football Confederation (CAF) has nominated Regragui in the “coach of the year” category for the CAF Awards, scheduled to take place on July 21 in Morocco.
Regragui and the Moroccan football team’s head coach Vahid Halilhodzic were both nominated following their notable achievements this year.
