Rabat – Morocco recorded more than 1.14 million tourist arrivals in June, showing a 5% and 235% growth compared to the same period in 2019 and 2021 respectively, according to the Ministry of Tourism.

The notable performance, which exceeds that of June 2019, is seen as a positive indicator that hints at the sector’s recovery in the post-COVID era.

With the tourism sector maintaining a steady pace this year, more tourists are expected to visit the country, further accelerating the sector’s recovery pace.

The long-awaited visits by Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) for holidays also contributes to the rebound of the tourism sector. In June alone, the number of the Moroccan diaspora visiting the country reached 620,000.

The recent MREs arrival shows a 27% increase compared to June 2019. As Morocco has become an attractive summer destination, the number of visitors is expected to peak during the upcoming months.

The ministry further noted that the expansion of airlines’ passenger capacity, partnerships signed with tour operators to secure a significant number of arrivals, and the various measures undertaken to promote the attractiveness of the destination will further contribute to the revival of tourism in Morocco.

Among the measures the country introduced to revive the sector is the introduction of e-visas for foreigners coming from 49 countries.

The e-visa is valid for a maximum of 180 days from the day it is issued and allows entry into Moroccan territories for up to 30 days.

The Moroccan government has also eased travel restrictions, as both vaccinated and unvaccinated tourists and diaspora members are now eligible to access the North African country.

A recent report from Morocco’s Directorate of Financial Studies and Previsions shows that tourism revenues in the country have continued to recover from the effects of the pandemic, recording an increase of 123.3% over the past year.
