Laayoune – Gideon Sa’ar, Israel’s Minister of Justice announced on Twitter on Wednesday that his country’s junior football team will play a friendly match against its Moroccan counterpart.

The venue and time of the game have not been decided as of yet.

During a meeting with Faouzi Lekjaa, the president of Morocco’s Football Federation, Sa’ar expressed his willingness to “hold a friendly match between the youth teams of Israel and Morocco.”

In December last year, the two countries signed a “historic” football cooperation agreement that covers the holding of friendly matches.

Morocco’s women basketball team played a historic game last month against its Israeli counterpart. The game took place in Rabat, where the host team won with a close score of 62-58.

The meeting took place while Gideon Sa’ar and Issawi Frej, Israel’s Minister of Regional Cooperation, visited Morocco.

The two ministers’ visit came a few days after Aviv Kochavi, the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), made his first official trip to Morocco to discuss expanding the purview of the increasingly strong, strategic relationship between Israel and Morocco.

Beyond the fields of sports and security, relations between the two countries have remarkably deepened since they signed an agreement to normalize diplomatic ties in December 2020.

On Tuesday, Morocco’s Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahibi and Sa’ar announced that the two nations would collaborate in the fight against organized crime, terrorism, and human trafficking as well as share expertise in the digitization of their legal systems.
