Rabat – Morocco’s central bank, Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM), launched on Friday the first edition of an award dedicated to research in economic and financial research.

The prize aims to support scientific research in all domains related to the institution’s mission and fields of work, to strengthen cooperation with academia, and to elevate the country’s research sector, BAM said in a press release.

The award will be presented every 2 years; it is open to all Moroccan researchers younger than 40 years, and who have completed their doctoral studies in the past two years at a Moroccan or foreign institution.

To be considered, articles submitted for the prize must be written in Arabic, French, or English, and correspond to a chapter of a PhD thesis with “a high potential of publication,” BAM detailed.

The first place prize will amount to MAD 50,000 ($4,862), while the second — “encouragement” — prize will be MAD 30,000 ($2917).

The jury will also reserve the right to award any other outstanding submission a prize worth MAD 20,000 ($1944).

Applications for the first edition of the prize will be closed on September 30, 2022, with the award scheduled to be given during the second quarter of 2023.

Having announced last year that Morocco’s economic growth is surpassing initial forecasts, BAM is looking for ways to encourage academic, growth-related research to inform policy decisions.

Scientific research in Morocco has notably improved over the past few years, with many of the country’s biggest universities having achieved more international recognition and struck a wide range of partnership agreements with some of the world’s best universities.
