Rabat – Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita is expected to travel to Israel in September, the Jerusalem Post reported on July 28.

According to the Israeli news outlet, the Moroccan FM accepted an invitation from Regional Cooperation Minister Issawi Frej, who invited Bourita to the second anniversary of the Abraham Accords.

Frej was part of a high-level delegation that visited Morocco this week to discuss the need to develop and further advance cooperation between Rabat and Tel Aviv.

Following meetings with a number of senior Moroccan officials, including Bourita, Frej told the press that Israel and Morocco and Israel are committed to deepening their ties and advancing bilateral cooperation in a wide range of sectors.

“That was the goal of my visit, during which I felt that there is good wil in Morocco to strengthen the relations, the conversation and cooperation between the countries, which I will act to continue and promote,” he said.

Morocco and Israel normalized diplomatic relations in December 2020 as part of the US-brokered Abraham Accords. Since the re-establishment of relations, both countries have emphasized their determination to cooperate in all fields, including security.

Senior Israeli officials have in recent weeks commended Morocco’s key role in maintaining and promoting peace and security in the region.

Earlier this week, Frej notably emphasized Morocco’s potential to facilitate dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians.

In an interview with Israeli news outlet I24News, he argued that Morocco is the only mutually acceptable country that can help encourage a real conversation between Palestine and Israel.

If confirmed, this will not be Bourita’s first visit to Israel. In March, the Moroccan official traveled to Tel Aviv to take part in the Negev summit which convened diplomats from the countries that signed the Abraham Accords.

Bourita attended the summit alongside Bahraini, Egyptian, Emirati, and Israeli diplomats. Also attending the summit was the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who reiterated Washington’s unwavering commitment to the Abraham Accords.
