Culture Minister: Each Moroccan Region Will Eventually Have its Own Art School

Rabat – After announcing the launch of four new schools of Fine Arts in four Moroccan cities, Morocco’s Minister of Culture and Youth, Mehdi Bensaid said in a recent interview with a Moroccan news outlet that his ministry will likely inaugurate a school of art in each of the 12 Moroccan regions.

According to the minister, two art schools will open their doors in Rabat and Agadir next year, with Oujda and Marrakech following suit in 2024.

Morocco currently has only two schools of art in the cities of Casablanca and Tetouan. But the art school in the northern city of Tetouan is the only state-recognized art institution in Morocco.

Casablanca’s art school, which is under the supervision of the municipality, offers non-recognized diplomas. To solve this problem, Bensaid has signed with the city of Casablanca an agreement allowing university professors to give courses at the school starting next school year.

The school is expected to receive state recognition by the start of the 2023-2024 school year.

Thousands of students apply to Tetouan’s school of art each year, but only around 40 are accepted.

The four new institutions, which will be under the temporary supervision of professors from the Tetouan art school for at least one year, will give more students in Morocco the opportunity to major in artistic disciplines such as drawing, painting, sculpting, and design art related disciplines.

The new schools are expected to build a diverse community of young Moroccan artists, as well as support their breakthroughs to start their professional careers.

The decision to open a school of arts in each region will depend on the turnout of the six institutions, as well as the job market, the minister indicated.
