Rabat – The Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Morocco announced on Wednesday its plans to organize the first edition of beer festival Okoberfest on October 28 in Bouskoura, a suburb of Casablanca.

In an invitation to the public, the chamber wrote on Linkedin, “Experience the unique atmosphere of Oktoberfest under a marquee with more than 300 seats in Bouskoura.”

“A festive and warm atmosphere typical of Oktoberfest awaits you,” the post added. “Sit at large, convivial tables, enjoy traditional Bavarian food and drinks to the rhythm of Munich brass bands.”

Oktoberfest is the world’s largest beer festival originating from Munich, Germany. This year, Munich’s two-week long folk festival is scheduled from Saturday, September 17, to Saturday, October 1, 2022.

The festival dates back to the celebration of King Louis I’s marriage, then crown prince, to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen on October 12, 1810.

Oktoberfest’s celebration gradually expanded with the introduction of food and drinks booths in 1818 to develop into large beer halls by the late 20th century.

Today, Oktoberfest includes beer and food booths, games, amusement rides, music, and dancing.  The festival attracts annually more than six million beer-lovers with a total beer consumption of up 75,800 hectoliters.

The Oktoberfest’s tradition was also introduced to a number of US cities which host large German American populations.

This year, Bouskoura is joining the list of host cities of Munich’s beer festival.

Despite being a Muslim-majority country, Morocco is Africa’s second-largest wine exporter after South Africa. The country is also an importer of alcohol and wine.

In 2021, Morocco collected MAD 810 million ($79 million) from import taxes on alcohol and wine, marking a 24% growth from predicted revenues, MAD 651 million ($63 million).
