Rabat – Scorching temperatures continue to prevail across Morocco with the arrival of a prolonged heatwave that will last until Sunday.
A new weather alert from the General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) said that the new heatwave will start on Tuesday and bring temperatures ranging from 41 and 46 degrees Celsius.
Provinces such as Fquih Ben Salah, Khouribga, Béni Mellal, Settat, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Youssoufia, Rhamna, Marrakech, Chichaoua, Zagora, and Taroudant will experience heat waves ranging between 41 and 45 degrees.
Tata, Assa-Zag, Essamara, and the interior of various cities in Essaouira, Guelmim, Boujdour, Oued Ed-Dahab, and Aousserd will experience the same weather.
From Wednesday to Sunday, the provinces of Ouezzane, Fez, Moulay Yacoub, Taounate, Meknes, El Hajeb, Taza, Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, Khemisset, Khouribga, Khenifra, Beni Mellal, and Fkih Ben Salah will all experience high temperatures as part of the new heatwave.
The temperatures varying between 41 and 46 degrees will also concern Berrechid, Settat, Sidi Bennour, Benslimane, El Kelaa des Sraghna, Youssoufia, Rhamna, Marrakech, Chichaoua, Zagora, Tata, Taroudant, Assa-Zag, and Es-Semara.
The heat will affect the interior of many provinces from the south to the center to the north.
The provinces concerned include: Larache, Kenitra, Essaouira, Safi , Chtouka-Ait Baha, Tiznit, Agadir-Ida-Outanane, Inezgane-Ait Melloul, Boujdour, D’aousserd, Oued Ed-Dahab, Tan-Tan, Sidi Ifni, Guelmim, Tarfaya, and Laayoune.
While the summer season typically serves as a prime opportunity for outdoor activities — particularly beach days– the scorching temperatures have caused tragic incidents across the country due to wildfires.
Morocco has experienced a series of fires that ravaged hundreds of hectares in different regions, including Ouezzane, Larache, Tetouan, and Taza.
While the drought and high temperatures have contributed to the outbreak of fires, environmental expert Said Chaki also cited reckless human actions as a cause.
According to Chaki, natural causes are responsible for less than 5% of the total fires, while human error is believed to have provoked the majority of fires.
