Rabat – Wildfires ravaged over 200 hectares of land in Tetouan, northern Morocco, local authorities announced.
In a Saturday evening update, authorities said that additional human resources have been mobilized to control the wildfires.
Field intervention has been ongoing since Thursday to control the fire in the forest of Beni Ider, said the statement, noting that Canadair fire fighting jets have carried out 32 aerial operations to drop water in the area.
Authorities also evacuated 265 people living near the wildfires to guarantee their safety.
Morocco’s local authorities mobilized other equipment, including trucks, ambulances, and earthmoving machinery to tackle the crisis.
Massive wildfires have been ravaging hectares of lands in several provinces across Morocco.
Triggered by the recent heat waves and dry weather, the incidents are taking place in different regions, including Ouazzane, Larache, and Taza.
Wildfires impose a global threat across the world due to climate change challenges, higher temperatures and droughts.
The situation has led many countries to strengthen their intervention response to tackle similar crises during the summer season.
Reuters reported on Saturday that wildfires raged in southwestern France and Spain, causing the evacuation of thousands of people from their homes.
As many as 14,000 people have been evacuated from France’s Gironde region by Saturday, reported Reuters, adding that wildfires have also blistered lands in Portugal and other parts of Europe.
