Rabat – US President Joe Biden arrived in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, kicking off a visit to the Middle East amid criticisms from Palestinian activists.
Biden, joined by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, will meet with Israeli and Palestinians authorities before concluding his visit in Saudi Arabia.
This isBiden’s first visit to the region as president of the US.
But while a White House statement said the president would support a two-state solution and conduct talks with Palestinian authorities, Palestinians have greeted his visit with skepticism.
Critics assert that Biden’s policy will be no different than his predecessors’, asserting that it will not lead to concrete change in the Palestine-Israel conflict or within the region in general.
On social media, the hashtag #PalestineRefusesBiden trended, with many expressing their refusal to accept America as a reliable Palestinian ally.
Various Palestinian organizations have also announced plans to hold protests against the visit in several Palestinian citiest.
Billboards that read, “Mr. President, this is apartheid,” have also been erected in the entrance to Bethlehem, where Biden is expected to meet Palestinian officials.
Several billboards also show pictures of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh, who was killed by Israeli gunfire earlier this year, along with the slogan, “Justice for Shireen.”
Some also suspect that Biden’s visit to Saudi Arabia will end in the country establishing formal relations with Israel. Such relations would further America’s program to integrate Israel in the region and build an alliance against Iran.
