Rabat – King Mohammed VI has extended his condolences to the Emperor of Japan, Naruhito, on the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The King of Morocco said in a message that he was “deeply sorrowed by the despicable assassination of the late Shnizo Abe,” conveying his warm condolences and sincere feelings of compassion to the family and loved ones of the former PM.
The King described Abe as an “accomplished leader, who devoted his life to the service of the supreme interests of his compatriots and to their aspirations.”
Shinzo Abe was shot on Friday while delivering a speech at a political event in Naram in western Japan.
Several world leaders expressed compassion with Abe’s family, expressing astonishment and anger at his killing.
Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said his country “strongly condemns the heinous armed attack targeting former Prime Minister of Japan Abe Shinzo.”
The Italian Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, expressed his country’s condemnation, saying that the terrible attack that claimed Abe’s life affects Japan and its experience with pluralist democracy.
“Abe has been a great protagonist of Japanese and international political life in recent decades, thanks to his innovative spirit, his vision of reform. Italy is close to his loved ones, to the Government and the entire Japanese people,” Draghi said.
Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the EU Commission, also described the assassination as “brutal and cowardly murder.”
US Secretary of State Antony Bkinken expressed sadness and concern sharing his sympathy with the Japanese people and Abe’s family as soon as news broke that Japan’s longest-serving PM had been shot at.
“We don’t know his condition, we do know he’s been shot and our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, with the people of Japan. This is a very, very sad moment,” Blinken said.
