Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection called on citizens to receive a fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Tuesday, in light of the rising infection numbers in the country and stagnating vaccination figures.
Mouad Mrabet, Coordinator of the Ministry’s Health Emergency Center particularly insisted on “Morocco’s elderly population and those with chronic conditions to receive the supplementary vaccine dose urgently,”during the Ministry’s monthly briefing.
“This is all to raise the immunity levels and reduce the possibility of infection with the dangerous variants of COVID-19,” he added, stressing the importance of being vigilant during the days of Eid Al-Adha to avoid another rise in cases.
Morocco recorded 3,849 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, bringing the number of active cases to 1,230,095. 11 deaths were also recorded, an alarming number after Morocco had gone a long time with minimal numbers of infections and close to zero deaths.
The rise in cases is attributed to an uptick in travel, as tourists and Moroccans residing abroad enter the country and travel during the summer season, as well as increased internal movement for the Eid Al-Adha holidays.
The rise follows a global pattern of increasing cases as protective measures have been relaxed and the travel and tourism industries continue to recover.
