Rabat – Morocco confirmed 3,306 new cases of COVID-19 between July 1 and 2, as well as 2,532 recoveries and three deaths.
The number of active cases in the kingdom currently stands at 26,849, with more than 6 million people having received their third vaccine dose.
The country is currently experiencing a sharp increase in case numbers, compared to the decline it had seen over the past few months as people continued getting vaccines.
With the summer travel season which sees Moroccans living abroad return to their country, as well as an uptick in tourist activities, the increase may be viewed as expected or normal.
Additionally, the coming few days are expected to see a noted increase in travel within the country as Moroccans visit their families for Eid Al-Adha holidays.
In response to the recent increase in case numbers, Morocco has announced that it would be administering a fourth dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, in a bid to help collective immunity towards the virus last for longer.
Moroccans who are aged 18 or older are advised to get a fourth supplementary dose six months after the third one, with elderly people and those who are immunocompromised being cited as the ones who need it most.
COVID cases are increasing throughout the world, likely due to increased travel and relaxed social distancing measures.
In the UK, cases surged more than 30% over the past week, with most of the recorded cases being of the Omicron variety. Authorities in France have also started encouraging the use of facemasks again to combat the spread of the virus.
