Rabat – The General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) on Friday issued an alert about a new heatwave that is set to hit several provinces across Morocco.
In a red weather alert, the weather office forecasts temperatures to range between 44 and 46 degrees celsius on Saturday in several provinces in the Oriental region, including Oujda-Angad, Driouch, Brkane, Nador, Taourirt, and Guercif.
Temperatures between 43 and 45 degrees are expected in the provinces of Beni Mellal, Khouribga, Settat, Kelaa des Sraghna, Rhamna, Marrakech, Taroudant, and Tata on Friday.
Temperatures varying between 39 and 43 degrees will concern several other provinces on Friday, including Boulemane, Oujda-Angad, Driouch, Taza, Berkane, Nador, Taourirt, Guercif, Fez, Moulay Yacoub, Taounate, Meknes, Fquih Ben Salah, and Khenifra.
On Saturday, temperatures reaching between 42 and 44 degrees are expected to hit Taza, Khouribga, Beni Mellal, Fquih Ben Salah, Boulemane, Taroudant, Zagora, and Tata.
This is the second heatwave alert the DMN issued this week. In a previous weather notice, DMN reported a heatwave with temperatures ranging between 41 and 45 degrees. The alert concerned cities in the oriental region, as well as in central and southern Morocco.
The high temperatures contribute to drought impacting Morocco and its seasonal harvests. The country is experiencing its worst drought in three decades.
Ongoing droughts and high temperatures have caused drops in Morocco’s cereal production, which reached 34 million quintals in the 2021-2022 agricultural season. The number represents a decrease of 67% compared to a year earlier.
