Rabat – Several regions in Morocco are set to see heavy downpours today between 2 p.m. and 11 p.m, according to a weather alert from Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).
Released today, the DGM note explains that the list of regions in Morocco that would see the downpour include Taza, Sefrou, Meknes, Fez, Moulay Yaacoub, Ifrane, El Hajeb, Al Hoceima, Boulemane, Khemisset, Khenifra, Azilal, Al Haouz, Tinghir, Ouarzazate, Midelt, and Errachidia.
Rating the alert at the “Orange” level, the note specifies that rainfall would average 20 to 30 millimeters in these regions. The rain is also likely to be coupled with wind storms, the DGM note points out. Wind speed should average 60 to 70 km per hour.
Earlier this week, several regions in Morocco saw heavy rainfall. The recent weather events make a welcome change from the series of heatwaves that had hit many provinces across Morocco.
The dramatic rise in temperatures and the drought season that ensued resulted in human casualties and considerable material property damage following the wildfires that plagued Morocco’s Northern regions.
With rising temperatures in the past weeks coinciding with Morocco’s most severe drought in four decades, the country’s rain-reliant agriculture has registered a remarkable drop in productivity levels. Morocco’s cereal production decreased by a staggering 70% this year, according to some estimates, deepening the country’s reliance on grain imports.
In addition to agriculture, the recent heatwaves and declining rainfall are exerting significant pressure on the country’s water resources.
According to Morocco’s ministry of agriculture, rainfall levels reached 199 millimeters at the end of May 2022, 56% less than the 30-year average of 355 millimeters, and a 34% drop compared to the previous year.
