Morocco’s Port Traffic Dropped 1.1% in Late July 2022

Despite a strong post-pandemic recovery for Moroccan ports, Morocco’s port traffic totaled more than 52.81 million tons by the end of July 2022, indicating a 1.1% decrease from the same period last year.

Rabat – Despite a strong post-pandemic recovery for Moroccan ports, Morocco’s port traffic totaled more than 52.81 million tons by the end of July 2022, indicating a 1.1% decrease from the same period last year.

In terms of trade flows, Morocco’s imports totaled 34.89 million tons at the end of last month, representing a 6.6% gain while exports fell 19.3% to 15.36 million tons, according to the National Ports Agency’s (ANP) latest figures on port activities.

With a 0.9% rise in activity during the first seven months of 2022, Jorf Lasfar Port took the top position with a 38.9% share of overall traffic, representing a volume of more than 20.53 million tons of goods transited through the port.

For its part, the port of Casablanca accounted for 28.9% of total traffic and registered a traffic volume of more than 15.24 million tons by the end of July 2022.

But the Casablanca port’s activity also decreased by 13.8% compared to the same period a year earlier.

The port of Safi came in third position, with a share of 11.2%. It recorded approximately 3.71 million tons of goods by the end of July this year, down 7.4% from the same period in the previous year,  and over 2.18 million tons for the new port of Safi (up 17.7%).

Coming fourth was the port of Agadir, with a 7.3% share and a traffic volume of more than 3.87 million tons. According to the ANP’s data, the port’s traffic grew by 20.9% by the end of last month.

The port of Mohammedia ranked sixth, with 6.4% and about 3.37 million tons. It is followed by the port of Nador, whose traffic share is 4.2% and the port of Laayoune — with a 2.3% share of Morocco’s port traffic and an activity level of 1.22 million tons by the end of July this year.
