Laayoune – Morocco has secured 62 medals during the Islamic Solidarity Games 2022 in Turkey.

During the athletics competition, which ran from August 9 to 18, Moroccan athletes won 15 gold, 13 silver, and 34 bronze medals.

The gold medals are divided between four in athletics, three in kickboxing, taekwondo, and karate, and two in pétanque.

As for the silver medals, Morocco won four in kickboxing, three in athletics, two in taekwondo and judo, and one each in pétanque and karate.

Additionally, Morocco won seven bronze medals in both athletics and pétanque, nine in kickboxing, four in taekwondo and karate, two in shooting, and one in judo.

With these athletic achievements, Morocco ranked as the 6th highest medal earning country in the Islamic Solidarity Games.

Morocco sent 126 male and 51 female athletes, a total of 177 competitors that competed in the eagerly anticipated games after they were postponed due to COVID-19 last year.

Moroccan competitors competed in 16 different sports, while being supervised by 48 coaches, medical professionals, physical trainers, and physiotherapists.

Morocco placed seventh in the medal standings in the previous Islamic Solidarity Games, which were held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 2017. The North African country gained 7 gold, 4 silver, and 15 bronze medals that year.

This year, 4,200 competitors representing 56 nations took part in the fifth iteration of the Islamic Solidarity Games, with athletes participating in 24 sports across 13 competition sites.

The competition, which was first held in Saudi Arabia in 2005 and is run by the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF), aims to foster the growth of athletes from the Islamic world and to strengthen a sense of community and solidarity among athletes.
