Rabat – A new heatwave with temperatures reaching 46 degrees Celsius is expected to hit several provinces across Morocco from Friday to Sunday.
The General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) said today that temperatures ranging between 40 and 43 degrees are expected in Moulay Yacoub, Fez, Meknes, Taounate, Ouezzane, Khemisset, Sidi Slimane, Fquih Ben Salah, Khouribga, Beni Mellal, and Settat throughout the weekend.
The same temperatures will also hit Marrakech, Rehamna, and El Kelaa des Sraghna.
Meanwhile, the provinces of Errachidia, Zagora, Tata, Taroudant, Assa-Zag, and Es-Semara will experience temperatures ranging between 42 and 46 degrees on Saturday and Sunday.
The same weather will concern the provinces of Essaouira, Guelmim, Boukdour, Aousserd, and Oued Ed-Dahab.
Several provinces experienced moderate weather over the past week, with temperatures ranging between 28 and 29 degrees, including in the Rabat region.
Compared to August, July was marked by several heatwaves with temperatures ranging over 46 degrees across Morocco.
The high temperatures added up to the drought pressure in the North African country, with reports indicating that this is the kingdom’s worst drought in three decades.
The high temperatures and lack of rainfall in the 2021-2022 agricultural season has also resulted in an alarming decrease in agricultural production.
Amid the ongoing, severe drought, Morocco’s cereal production recorded only 4 million quintals in this agricultural season, representing a decrease of 67% compared to the previous campaign.
