Canada’s head coach Jesse Marsch praised both Morocco and the Netherlands after his team arrived safely in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16, describing the two nations as “giants of world football” ahead of a potential knockout clash.
Canada secured their place in the round of 16 with a 1-0 victory over South Africa after Stephen Eustáquio scored in the 92nd minute.
Canada will now face either Morocco or the Netherlands following their Round of 32 encounter tonight at 2 a.m., a decisive clash for the Atlas Lions.
While awaiting the reveal of their next opponent, Marsch acknowledged the quality of both sides and the challenge that lies ahead.
Following Canada’s qualification, Marsch expressed admiration for both Morocco and the Netherlands and said his side would be ready for the challenge ahead.
He described Morocco as the “modern giant” and the Netherlands as the “traditional giant.”
“I feel like it’s a free hit, and we’re going to go after it and do everything we can to see if we can find a way to get a win,” he said.
The next round would demand focus, intensity, and tactical discipline from the Canadian players against whichever opponent qualifies, he added.
Morocco arrived with growing international status after their historic run to the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finals, when they became the first African and Arab nation to reach that stage of the tournament. Since then, the world started having higher expectations for the Atlas Lions.
The Moroccan team has continued to build on that success with a squad known for its defensive campaign and dangerous pace in transition. Their rise has made them one of the most respected teams on the global stage.
The Netherlands, on the other hand, remains one of the most respected and feared teams in the world of football. A three-time World Cup finalist, the Dutch are known for their technical quality, tactical structure, physical strength and depth across the pitch, making them a dangerous opponent in any knockout tie.
For Canada, who have already secured its best World Cup campaign in decades by reaching the Round of 16, the next match will be another major test as they chase a place in the quarter-finals for the first time in its history.
Marsch has made it clear that his players will give their all, regardless of whether they face Morocco or the Netherlands.
