Laayoune – Morocco ranked 1st in a list of Arab countries that positively view both China and the US, said the Arab Barometer in its “US and China Competition in MENA 2021-2022” report.

According to the report, 64% of Moroccans said in a survey that they view China in a positive light.

Meanwhile, 69% of the same Moroccan respondents said they held a favorable opinion on the United States.

The report highlights that Morocco is the only surveyed nation where the US was more popular than China.

This report is part of the Arab Barometer’s latest annual report, which details the results of a survey on the competition between the United States and China over countries of the MENA region.

The survey included 23,000 respondents across ten countries in the MENA region, to find out how the majority of common people view relations with the US and China.

Even though 64% of Moroccans view China positively, only 36% of them wish to establish stronger economic ties with the Asian country. Compared to the 42% who responded in favor of stronger economic ties with the US.

In this regard, the report added that 21% of Moroccans are worried of the encroachment of China’s economy in their country, while 22% responded the same regarding the US.

The Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC) reports that in 2020, China exported  MAD 49.4 billion ($4.83 billion) to Morocco. Whereas, the North African nation exported MAD 4.2 billion ($410 million) worth of goods to China in the same year.

According to the same economic database, the US exported over MAD 327 billion ($32 billion) to Morocco in 2020, and imported over MAD 439 billion ($43 billion) in the same year.
