Laayoune – Morocco’s Special Olympics national team secured the fourth spot in the men’s football category at the recently concluded Special Olympics Unified Cup.

According to the Special Olympics Unified Cup 2022 website, 22 teams from 21 countries participated in the World Cup for the unified football tournament, which was held from July 30 to August 6 in the US city of Detroit.

The Moroccan national team was drawn in Group A of the men’s category along with the United States, Brazil, South Korea, and Nigeria, while Group B included the teams of Jamaica, Paraguay, Saudi Arabia, Romania, and Singapore.

During the tournament, the Moroccan national team managed to advance to the semifinals after playing well and winning 3-0 against the host country, the United States.

The Moroccan Special Olympics team took on its Jamaican counterpart in the semi-finals, where it lost to the Caribbean team 1-0.

Morocco and Brazil then faced off in a playoff match to determine the third and fourth places. Although the Moroccan team performed well in the third place game, the South American team ultimately won the match 1-0.

Morocco would have secured the bronze medal if it had triumphed over Brazil in this match.

Athletes with and without mental disabilities get together in the same squad to compete in the Special Olympics Unified Sports every year.

Four teams from the Middle East and North Africa participated in this year’s Special Olympics Unified Cup. The male category featured Morocco and Saudi Arabia, while the female division had teams from Egypt and the United Arab Emirates competing in it.
