Rabat – Morocco has joined the global campaign supporting Palestinians’ rights and condemning the latest Israeli attacks against the Gaza Strip amid a resurgence of hostilities in the region.

Rabat is following “with great concern the deteriorating situation” in Gaza, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday, stressing that the return of violence has caused avoidable human losses and untold material damage.

“The Kingdom of Morocco, whose sovereign his majesty King Mohammed VI chairs the Al-Quds Committee calls for avoiding further escalation and restoring calm so that the situation does not degenerate,” the statement said, warning that “further tensions” could “jeopardize the chances for peace” in the region.

Morocco also renewed its support for the rights of the Palestinian people, affirming that the lasting solution to the decades-long conflict should be based on a two-state solution that would guarantee Palestinians their independence and basic human rights

Over 31, including six children, have been killed in the latest israeli assaults on the Gaza Strip; more than 260 have sustained injuries.

Israel’s latest assault on Gaza started on Friday, with the Israeli army launching a series of airstrikes in what it says will be “a week of operations” against militants in the strip.

In addition to Morocco, many countries have condemned Israe’s latest attacks on Gaza. Israel should be held responsible for the “dangerous escalation” against Palestinians, the Arab League said, calling on the international community and the UN Security Council to “take immediate and effective action to stop this aggression.”

The Palestinian authority strongly condemned the escalation in the Gaza Strip and denonced the Israeli acts in the Al Aqsa Mosque after Israel allowed a group of Jewish “extremists to strom the holy site.”

Nabil Abu Rudeinehm, spokseman for President Mahmoud Abbbas, said earlier today: “The presisting  Israeli aggression whether in the Al Aqsa Mosque the Gaza Strip, Jenin and other Palestinian cities and vilages crosses all red lines and presents an Israeli attempt to push the situation into more ecalation and tension.”

The  Palestinian official urged the international community, particularly the US, to intervene to stop the Israeli aggression “before it is too late.”
