Rabat – Morocco continues to do well on its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, with cases dropping to record lows over the past week. Despite thousands of tests issued by the Ministry of Health every day, new daily infections have fallen below 20 a day for several days now.
Morocco’s public health authorities issued 5,586 tests on Friday, finding only 13 new cases, while on Thursday 4,306 tested individuals resulted in 12 newly discovered cases. The current low case numbers are now below the last lull in the country’s epidemic in April and May of this year.
Over the past 24 hours, 36 people recovered from COVID-19 complications, nearly triple the new found cases. Out of a population of nearly 37 million, Morocco currently has 239 known active cases.
The country’s vaccination campaign continues to provide free vaccination to any willing citizen or resident, with 23.4 million people having received two vaccine doses, 6.8 have been administered a booster shot, and 44,016 people have received a fourth dose.
Moroccan hospitals are currently caring for 11 patients suffering from severe COVID-19 complications, with three people on breathing support and one patient requiring intubation. Currently only 0.21% of Moroccan intensive care beds are occupied by COVID-19 related cases.
These numbers won’t shock most people in Morocco, where life appears to have returned to a pre-pandemic level of normalcy, yet in many parts of the world COVID-19 continues to infect thousands of people every day.

Speaking on Wednesday, WHO Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called the global decline of the pandemic “encouraging.” He warned, however: “There is no guarantee these trends will persist. The most dangerous thing is to assume they will.”
Morocco’s northern neighbors continue to see relatively high infection rates. While Morocco reported 192 new cases to the WHO this week, Spain found 16,192 new cases, France detected 105,883 new cases, Germany reported 181,064, whereas Italy discovered 123,782 new infections. In the US, meanwhile, 476,675 new cases were found over the past week.
