Rabat – Morocco and Mauritania have said they are looking forward to improving bilateral security cooperation as part of their commitment to regional peace.

The two countries renewed their commitment to strengthen cooperation in a meeting today between Morocco’s head of the General Directorates of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST) Abdellatif Hammouchi and the Director General of Mauritania’s National Security, Meshgharou Ould Sidi Leghweizi.

A statement from Morocco’s DGSN said that the discussion between the two security officials focused on revising forms and levels of bilateral cooperation in security as well as means to advance collaboration as part of the two countries’ commitment to contribute to regional peace.

“The two parties also discussed the importance of strengthening cooperation in the field of police training,” the DGSN statement said, stressing that the countries anticipate more collaboration and exchange in the security field.

The meeting also served as an opportunity to acknowledge the importance of the Moroccan-Mauritanian bilateral cooperation in security, “as it constitutes an effective and regular model for south-south cooperation.”

Morocco and Mauritania have frequently expressed determination to boost bilateral cooperation in different fields, including security.

In May, Chief of General Staff of the Mauritanian Armed Forces El Mokhtar Bolle Chaabane held a series of meetings with Moroccan officials during a visit to the North African country.

During his visit, the Mauritanian official met with Morocco’s Minister Delegate to the Chief of the Government and the head of the National Defense Administration Abdeltif Loudyi. The meeting focused on the two countries’ determination to deepen security ties between the two armed forces.

The two countries signed a memorandum on the establishment of the Joint Military Commission in 2006. The agreement governs military cooperation between the two countries.
