Rabat – Morocco’s national boxing team has secured two golds, five silvers, and two bronzes in the African men’s and women’s box championship, ranking fourth on the continent.

According to Morocco’s Royal Federation of Boxing, the two gold medals went to Hamza El-Berbari in the 71 kg weight category and Khadija El Mardi in the over 81 kg category.

In May, El Mardi won Istanbul’s World Boxing Championship in the +81 kg category after defeating Turkey’s Sennur Demir in an intense final match.

Besides the impressive performances of El-Berbari and El Mardi in the African championship, Morocco’s Chaymae Rhaddi secured a silver medal in the lightweight category (60 kg) after a tough defeat against Zambia’s Felistars Nkandu.

Meanwhile, Rabab Cheddar won Morocco’s second silver medal after losing to Algeria’s Roumayssa Boualam in the light flyweight (50 kg).

Said Mortaji, Idriss Reroumi, Mohamed Assaghir held the remaining silver medals in the 51 kg, 75 kg, and 80 kg categories.

As for the bronze medals, they went to Widad Bertal (57 kg) and Abdelhaq Nadir (63.7kg).

With a total of nine medals, Morocco ranked fourth behind Mozambique, Algeria, and Zambia.

Mozambique topped the regional championship with five gold medals. Algeria and Zambia followed with four gold medals each.

The African Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championship returned this year after a 5-year hiatus. 24 champions were crowned in the regional competition, with a record of 11 countries winning gold medals.

58 women and 121 men boxers born between 1982 and 2003 participated in the 2022 African Elite Boxing Championship co-organized by the African Boxing Confederation (AFBC) and Mozambique’s Boxing Federation in Maputo from September 9 to 18.
