Rabat – Moroccan international Sofiane Diop has opened up about his decision to represent Morocco instead of Senegal, explaining that his desire to strengthen his connection with his mother’s Moroccan roots played a major role in his choice.
In an interview with Radio France Internationale (RFI), the OGC Nice player discussed his multicultural upbringing and the personal reasons behind his decision to join the Atlas Lions in 2023.
Born in France to a Senegalese father and a Moroccan mother, Diop grew up surrounded by two different cultures, both of which continue to shape his identity.
The midfielder explained that his family background allowed him to discover the traditions and lifestyles of both countries while maintaining close relationships with relatives in Morocco and Senegal.
He also spoke about his regular visits to both countries, explaining that he feels equally connected to his Moroccan and Senegalese heritage.
For Diop, growing up between the two cultures has been an important part of his personal development, allowing him to appreciate his family’s different backgrounds without placing one above the other.
Why Diop chose the Atlas Lions
Speaking about his decision to represent Morocco in 2023, Diop explained that he wanted to learn more about his mother’s culture and develop a stronger connection with his Moroccan roots.
The midfielder stressed that choosing the Atlas Lions did not mean distancing himself from Senegal, where he continues to maintain strong family and cultural ties.
His decision was therefore driven by a personal desire to explore one side of his identity rather than a rejection of the other.
Diop also expressed his happiness whenever he visits relatives in either country, highlighting the importance of family in maintaining his connection with both cultures.
His comments offer insight into the personal considerations behind his international career choice, particularly for players who grow up with ties to several countries.
While Diop ultimately decided to wear Morocco’s national team jersey, he continues to embrace both sides of his family heritage.
