Casablanca – A total of 285,000 Moroccans were registered in Spain’s social security system at the end of July, making them the top foreign workers outside the European Union, the Spanish Ministry of Labor, Migration, and Social Security has reported.

According to data from the Spanish ministry, Moroccans remain at the top end of the ranking, followed by Colombians (122,192) and Venezuelans (118,147).

In the first seven months of 2022, the overall number of foreigners entered into the Spanish social security system reached 2,451,492, a decrease of 11,398 from the previous month.

The total number of foreign employees paying into the Spanish social security system is 1,605,008, with 846,484 coming from countries outside the European Union.

In addition to Moroccans’ affiliation with the country’s social security system, Moroccans have maintained their position as the largest foreign community that legally settled in the Iberian country, representing 16% of foreigners established in Spain.

According to Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE), almost 879,943 Moroccans were legally residing in Spain, until January 2022, an increase of 0.8% (+7,184 people) from the same period last year.

This is not the first time Moroccans have topped the list of foreigners affiliated with Spain’s social security system.

In April this year, about 300,000 Moroccans also enrolled in the country’s social security system, followed by Chinese people (108,795) and Venezuelans (108,765).

Similarly, at the end of May, 310,619 Moroccans were registered in Spain’s social security system. They again maintained their high position followed by Colombians (112,349) and Venezuelans (111,683).
