Rabat – Morocco is seeking to secure a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council for the 2028-2029 term.
Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita announced the news today during a press conference with his counterpart from Luxembourg Jean Asselborn.
In the press conference, Bourita welcomed Luxembourg’s support for Morocco’s bid.
Morocco has served in the Security Council as a non-permanent member in different terms including between 1963-1964, 1992-1993, and 2012-2013.
Bourita also expressed Morocco’s support for Luxembourg’s own bid to join the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member in 2031-2032.
Asselborn visited Morocco to discuss means to boost cooperation. During his visit, the Luxembourg FM conveyed his country’s support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a serious and credible effort to end the dispute.
According to Asselborn, the autonomy initiative forms a “good basis” to end the dispute.
Luxembourg also expressed support for the UN-led political process and the efforts made by UN Personal Envoy for Western Sahara Staffan de Mistura.
This month will mark the UN Security Council vote to renew the term of the UN peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara, MINURSO.
MINURSO’s term will expire by the end of this year. The latest extension of the mission’s term was in October 2021, when the Security Council members convened to vote on Resolution 2602.
The UN Security Council is dedicating four working sessions to discussing Western Sahara in October.
