Borussia Mönchengladbach youngster Wael Mohya is close to committing his international future to Morocco, despite having represented Germany at youth level. The 17-year-old attacker, valued at €17 million, has reportedly held advanced talks over switching his sporting nationality after an impressive debut Bundesliga season in which he made 15 appearances, scored two goals, and provided one assist.

Mohya returned to Gladbach’s pre-season training in excellent shape. He was among the top three performers in the club’s endurance tests, showing his strong physical condition ahead of the new Bundesliga campaign.

Although he was born in Germany and played seven matches for Germany’s youth teams between the U16 and U18 levels, Mohya is eligible to represent Morocco through his family roots. Reports in Germany say he is now close to making the switch.

The move has been expected for several months. In March, Mohya withdrew from Germany’s U18 squad before the European Under-19 Championship qualifiers and instead stayed with Gladbach. He has not played for Germany since then.

A rising star

Mohya is regarded as one of Germany’s brightest young attacking talents. His game is based on skill, creativity, and smart decision-making rather than physical strength.

His biggest weapon is his dribbling. He is comfortable in one-on-one situations and can beat defenders with quick changes of direction and close control. He enjoys receiving the ball at his feet and attacking defenders directly.

The young player is also versatile. He can play on either wing, as an attacking midfielder, or as a second striker. This gives coaches several tactical options.

Mohya is known for his football intelligence. He makes good decisions, finds space between defenders, and knows when to pass or dribble. He is also a creative player who can unlock tight defenses with clever passes and quick combinations.

His technical quality is another key strength. He has an excellent first touch, keeps the ball well under pressure, and stays calm in difficult situations.

Even though creating chances is his main role, Mohya has also shown he can score goals. He found the net twice and registered one assist in just 15 Bundesliga appearances during his first professional season.

His speed over short distances, balance, and agility help him escape defenders, while his strong fitness and work rate have improved his pressing and defensive contribution.

Like many young players, he still has areas to improve. Building more physical strength, becoming more consistent over 90 minutes, and increasing his goal numbers are the next steps in his development.

Morocco’s long-term plan

Morocco’s recent success on the international stage could also have influenced Mohya’s decision. The Atlas Lions reached the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup before losing to France, showing they remain one of Africa’s strongest teams.

Another major attraction is the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host alongside Spain and Portugal. If Mohya joins Morocco, he could have the chance to play in a home World Cup at just 21 years old.

If the switch is completed, Morocco would secure another highly rated dual-nationality talent as it continues to build a young and ambitious squad for the future.
