Rabat – The UN, African Union, and a score of countries released official statements condemning bloody car bombings that hit a busy area in Mogadishu, Somalia on Saturday, killing at least 100 people.
Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamd said that the heinous bombings resulted in injuries among 300 people.
The death toll could rise in the deadliest attack since a truck bombing in the same block five years ago killed 500.
“We ask our international partners and Muslims around the world to send their medical doctors here since we can’t send all the victims outside the country for treatment,” Somalia’s president said.
The heinous attack drew criticism and condemnation from the international community.
“These attacks underline the urgency and critical importance of the ongoing military offensive to further degrade Al-Shabaab,” AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) said on Saturday.
The UN mission in Somalia UNSOM echoed the same statement, vowing to stand “resolutely with all Somalis against terrorism.”
Al-Shabaab, a group affiliated with terror organization Al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that its fighters were targeting the ministry of education.
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and Jordan have also condemned the attacks.
