Rabat – Morocco has set up new customs measures for travelers carrying gifts or purchases worth over MAD 2,000 ($184).
Moroccan newspaper L’Economiste said that purchases or gifts carried by travelers to or from Morocco will be subject to the new measure.
“As a traveler visiting Morocco, you are authorized to bring back from abroad gifts in limited quantities and without commercial character, without customs formalities or payment of import duties and taxes,” the newspaper quoted customs as saying. The items, however, should be within the limit of an overall value of MAD 2,000 or $184.
Customs will also put in place new regulations stipulating that a traveler has the right to carry only one perfume bottle of 150 milliliters and one bottle of eau de toilette of 250 milliliters.
Under the new regulations, travelers will also only be able to carry one pack of cigarettes while all drugs transported must be justified by a medical prescription.
“Medicines for personal use are in principle admitted duty-free,” L’Economiste said, stressing that travelers need to present relevant medical documents.
In July, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predicted Morocco’s tax revenues to increase the country’s GDP by 12%.
The North African country’s tax revenues account for 21.6% of its GDP.
According to recent data from Morocco’s state treasury (TGR), customs revenues reached MAD 49 billion ($4.7 billion) at the end of the first half of 2022, increasing by almost 25% compared to the previous year.
