Rabat – Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki on Saturday commended the meeting that was held between Libya’s factions in Rabat on Friday.
“I welcome the meeting between Libya’s President of Parliament and President of the High Council in Morocco and hope that it augurs a political dialogue for the solution of the institutional impasse in Libya,” the official tweeted.
Morocco has been one of the key actors trying to resolve the conflict in Libya. The country has been operating with two rival governments, as eastern and western factions failed to unite following the 2011 revolution.
On Friday, President of Libya’s Parliament Aguila Saleh and President of the Libyan High Council Khaled Al-Mishri held talks in Morocco, in an attempt to relaunch dialogue and make progress toward a political solution.
Thanking Morocco for its mediation in the conflict, the two politicians agreed to relaunch the dialogue and implement the Bouznika mechanism by the end of the year.
The mechanism, related to the appointment of leadership positions in the state’s institutions, was agreed upon by the leaders of Libya’s factions after a round of dialogue in Morocco’s Bouznika in October 2020.
Morocco has been voicing support for a UN-backed political solution to the crisis, and recently welcomed the appointment of Abdoulaye Bathily as the new special representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya.
