Rabat- Moroccan gamers spend an average of 200 MAD per month on gaming microtransactions, a survey by Moroccan market research firm Sunergia says.

The survey is titled “Video games in Morocco: an industry worth billions of dirhams?” and shows that the amount can vary wildly across different demographic categories.

The Sunergia report found that men spend an average of 268 MAD per month, while women spend only 24 MAD.

Survey data also points out that age has a strong correlation with expenditure. People aged between 25 and 34 spend 314 MAD monthly on microtransactions, whereas people aged between 35 and 44 spend MAD 222.

In terms of the geographical distribution of the data, the Sunergia report suggests that people in the northern and eastern regions of Morocco are the biggest spenders with a monthly expenditure of MAD 348.

The survey further indicates that nearly 1 in 4 Moroccans regularly play video games, with the number reaching 47% among young people aged between 15 and 24.

The same source estimated that the Moroccan gaming industry will account for roughly 2.5 billion dirhams in microtransactions in 2022, though the survey did not include Moroccans under 18.

Morocco has recently shown considerable interest in the e-gaming industry. On March 2, Morocco’s Minister of Youth Mehdi Bensaid and President of the Royal Moroccan Federation of Videogames Hicham Lakhlifi signed a partnership to strengthen the e-gaming industry in the country.

Gaming has become a mainstream entertainment medium and one of the world’s biggest industries. As access to the internet, computers, and smartphones continues to increase in Morocco, the country’s gaming demographic is also set to become bigger.
