Rabat – Participants in a national symposium, held Wednesday in Laayoune, unanimously stressed that the massive turnout in the recent elections reflects the southern province population’s willingness to implement Morocco’s autonomy plan.
Speakers at this meeting, organized by the National Observatory of Voters’ Rights, which has consultative status in the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), stated that the participation of local populations in the electoral process demonstrates that the autonomy plan is the only solution that takes into account the expectations of the inhabitants of the southern provinces.
It also allows them to democratically elect their legitimate representatives and manage their local affairs in democracy and stability.
The speakers also highlighted people’s high turnout in the various local, regional, and legislative elections held in September, which saw the highest participation rates at the national level.
The population’s electoral turnout confirms their commitment to the territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the implementation of advanced regionalization and the new development model of the southern provinces.
Khalid Traboulssi, president of the National Observatory of Voter Rights said that this symposium aims to enrich the debate on the Sahrawi voter’s role in the virtuous dynamic the southern regions are experiencing in the wake of growing international support for the Moroccan Sahara and the autonomy plan.
The southern provinces’ population’s collective adherence to this political process shows their belief in the advancement of their nation and their dedication to the territorial integrity of the Kingdom, said Moulay Hamdi Ould Errachid, president of the Communal Council of Laayoune.
