Rabat – American medical organization Mayo Clinic and the International Investment Group (IIG Group) announced on Tuesday that the first American hospital in Morocco will be built in the city of Mehdia, in the Kenitra region.
CEO of IIG Group Barakat Ali Shanableh said the “generous” royal invitation to foreign investors to invest in the health sector, as well as Morocco’s favorable climate motivated the firm to invest in the project.
The hospital is set to have a capacity of 700 beds and create 5,200 employment opportunities. The projects will also include an American medical university with a capacity of 2,000 students.
In that university, 25% of student positions are set to be reserved to Moroccan students with high grades and from low-income backgrounds. They will also be granted scholarships.
Mayo Clinic was formed more than 150 years ago in Minnesota and is home to some of the highest-regarded medical institutions and schools in the US and the world.
Earlier this year, Morocco’s government announced plans to increase the number of health professionals in the country to more than 90,000 by 2025, in a bid to improve the nation’s healthcare system.
