Rabat – Costa Rica clinched a 1-0 victory against Japan in the FIFA World Cup on Sunday, earning an important three points to keep their campaign in the competition alive.
The first half of the game ended in a stalemate. However, Costa Rica’s Keysher Fuller ended the deadlock in the 81st minute scoring the first goal in the game.
The Blue Samurais made an impressive debut in the World Cup this year, defeating Germany 2-1. The victory was a milestone in the Asian country’s football history.
Meanwhile, Costa Rica sustained a heavy 7-0 defeat against Spain; their worst loss yet in a World Cup tournament.
For Japan, the Sunday game presented a legitimate chance to move to the next round, while for Costa Rica, the game was about regaining pride.
In previous World Cups, Japan typically started strong but eventually fell short of reaching the tournament’s advanced stages. In 2018, they made their way out of a group featuring world-class teams such as Senegal, Poland, and Colombia.
In 2010, the Japanese team made it to the round of 16 before losing to Paraguay on penalties.
This year, Japan has scored impressive wins against the USA, Ghana, Australia, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia in the lead-up to the World Cup.
Costa Rica, on the other hand, has not scored a win in the World Cup since beating both Uruguay and Italy in their groups in 2014.
