Rabat – King Mohammed VI appointed on Monday former speaker of Morocco’s House of Representatives Habib El Malki as the president of the Supreme Council for Education, Training and Scientific Research.
A statement from the royal palace said that King Mohammed VI received El Malki on Monday, giving him “high” instructions and guidelines for the “optimal implementation of the missions entrusted by the Constitution to this institution,” including promoting education and Moroccan schools.
The guidelines also aim to see the institution tackling challenges that education, training, and scientific research face as well as contributing to the assessment of public policies and programs in the educational sector.
The statement added that King Mohammed VI stressed the importance of supporting the reform of the education and training system in coordination with government departments and establishment concerned to achieve the main objectives of the needed reforms.
Per the King’s guidelines, the institution is required to achieve equity and equal opportunities in education, to promote foreign languages learning, and scientific research.
The government has acknowledged that the education sector is in need of deep and urgent reforms.
In November 2021, spokesperson of the government Mustapha Baitas said that the cabinet is well aware of the challenges in the sector.
“The reform of the education system cannot be delayed and requires the necessary political courage,” he said.
A report from the World Bank found that an average of 70% of children under the age of 10 are unable to read a simple text in the MENA region, including in Morocco.
The average of children under the age of 10 who are unable to read a simple text stands at nearly 65% in Morocco.
In addition to El Malki, King Mohammed VI also received Mohamed Joudar following his election as Secretary General of the Constitutional Union Party. Joudar was elected as the secretary general to the party in October after the withdrawal of three other candidates who ran for the same position.
