In a Tweet, the foreign affairs ministry called on Moroccan citizens in Turkiye to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of Turkish authorities. On Sunday evening, an explosion hit Istanbul’s Istiklal avenue. The explosion resulted in six casualties with more than 50 injured.
As of press time, the explosion’s cause remains unknown. However, many suspect that it was a suicide bombing.
“Police, medical, fire, and AFAD [Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency] teams were sent to the scene,” Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya tweeted following the blast.
Following the incident, Turkish authorities announced the opening of an investigation and banned the country’s media from sharing footage of the blast.
The district where the explosion happened is known as a hotspot for both locals and tourists visiting the city.
Videos from passers-by show parts of the street erupting in flames and loud bangs as people fled from the scene. The avenue closed down in the wake of the explosion, as it flooded with police, fighters, and medical rescue teams.
Turkiye previously suffered a series of bombing attacks between 2015 and 2017.
