Rabat- Nayef Aguerd has been selected by Morocco’s head coach Walid Regragui to join the official national team that will travel to Qatar to compete in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Expressing his enthusiasm about his participation in the Fifa World Cup, Aguerd wrote in a facebook post, “A dream since my childhood to play the most important competition in the world with my country. We will give it [our] all to make all the Moroccans of the world proud.”

Nayef Aguerd is a center-back for Premier League Club West Ham United and the Moroccan national team. Aguerd has also played for FUS Rabat, Dijon, and Rennes.

Born in Kenitra, the sought-after defender started his career at Mohammed VI Football Academy. He landed his first professional contract with Fath Union Sport also called FUS Rabat in 2014.

Aguerd played four seasons with FUS Rabat before joining French Ligue 1’s Dijon. He later joined French club Rennes FC in 2020.

Aguerd’s outstanding performance for the French club has piqued the interest of several prestigious clubs in Europe’s top leagues, particularly the English Premier League. His illustrious career continued to flourish when he signed a five-year contract with England’s West Ham United in 2022.

The former director for Mohammed VI Football Academy told the Athletic, “He’ll be flying the flag for Moroccan players in the Premier League.”

“He’s gone on to have a great career and he’s shown the young kids in Morocco it’s possible,” he continued. “West Ham is a good club for Nayef. The supporters are going to love him.”

It’s believed that West Ham United agreed on a fee of around £30 million ($37m) for Aguerd’s transfer.

The Moroccan center back has been described as a brilliant defender. His value in the football market is estimated at €25 million (MAD 275 million), according to TransferMarkt.

On 16 May 2022, he ranked as the third best African player in Ligue 1 for the Prix Marc-Vivien Foé. The Prix Marc-Vivien Foe honors the best African player who excelled for his team in the French football league (Ligue 1) during each season.

Aguerd is known for his “dominant aerial presence,” and “ability to read the game.”

Moroccan football fans have shown their support for the talented player on social media platforms and have high expectations for Morocco during the World Cup, the world’s largest football tournament.
