Rabat – Pakistan’s former PM Imran Khan has been shot in the leg whilst giving a speech at a rally in the eastern Punjab province of Wazirabad. Other bystanders have also been injured but no deaths have been recorded yet.
The shooter has been arrested, but their identity remains secret.
70 year-old Khan is in a stable position, Sky News reported. The former PM who was previously a cricketing star has been rallying for a new election after losing his position as PM in April.
The shooting took place in the midst of Khan’s six day march from Lahore to Islamabad in hopes to push the next election forward, as he was campaigning for “radical change,” reported Sky News.
The media outlet had just finished interviewing the former PM about threats of violence when the incident unraveled.
Khan was quickly seen to by medical professionals and was seen by witnesses being taken by ambulance to a hospital in Lahore.
Reports accusing Khan of asking the military for “illegal favors” surfaced at a conference on October 27, news outlet Reuters said. The former PM also made headlines in September for his “defamatory” remarks against Pakistan’s newly appointed military chief.
Pakistan’s military has been a long-standing powerhouse in the country as it ruled for over three decades since the country’s independence.
Khan’s government lost power following a vote of no confidence, yet he claimed that his removal was part of a “conspiracy” which he has accused the US of being involved in.
