Rabat – Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou’s stellar performances at the Qatar World Cup have put him on the radar of a number of elite European clubs, with the latest reports indicating that Italy’s Inter Milan is interested in signing the Moroccan shot-stopper.
According to reports from the Spanish media, Inter Milan is preparing to sell their current goalkeeper, Andre Onana Onana. The Cameroonian goalkeeper is said to have received interest from the Spanish club FC Barcelona and the German club Bayern Munich.
Currently playing for Sevilla in the top-tier Spanish league, Bounou stole the show at the 2022 FIFA World Cup by becoming the first African goalkeeper to maintain three clean sheets in a World Cup tournament.
In Morocco’s game against Spain in the round of 16, Bounou managed to fend off all the opposition’s penalties during the decisive penalty shootout. He was given the Man of the Match award for being the undisputed hero of Morocco’s history-making qualification for the quarter-finals.
The Moroccan goalkeeper is no stranger to such acclaim. He was awarded the Zamora trophy last season, which effectively recognized him as the best goalkeeper in the Spanish top-flight league ahead of illustrious competitors like Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois and Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak.
Prior to the World Cup, Bounou was also shortlisted by Frame Football as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
More recently, FIFA this week included the Moroccan goalkeeper in their list of nominees for the 2023 best goalkeeper award.
