Rabat – Morocco’s Minister of Industry and Trade Ryad Mezzour has said that the Atlas Lions’ historic achievements in the 2022 World Cup have allowed Moroccans to realize their value, namely who they are and what they are capable of achieving.

Mezzour made the statements in an interview with Moroccan news outlet Le360 on December 17.

“We have exceptional qualities. Football has clearly shown this to the whole world, but what matters the most is that Moroccans now realize that they are capable of achieving anything,” Mezzour said.

The minister stressed that the achievements of the Moroccan national team have boosted Morocco’s image worldwide.

In similar remarks, Morocco’s Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Social Economy Fatima Zahra Amour highlighted the positive impact of Morocco’s national football team on the country’s tourism. According to Armour, the Atlas Lions’ amazing World Cup run is sure to open up exciting tourism opportunities for Morocco.

“Morocco is now on the map of far more international countries beyond our traditional source markets,” Amour said.

Expressing pride in Morocco’ national football team, Mezzour tweeted: “I thank the Atlas Lions and extend my heartfelt congratulations to each and every member on this team that captivated the world and made history.”

“Heroes, you made us dream and made us happy. I wish you continued success in your future endeavors, and I am confident that you are capable of even greater accomplishments.”

The Atlas Lions are the first African team and the first Arab speaking-country to advance to the semi-finals in World Cup history.

Their journey in the World Cup was marked by a goalless draw ( 0-0) against Croatia, a 2-0 win over both Belgium and a 2-1 defeat of Canada (2-1) in the group stage. They went on to eliminate Spain in the round of 16 and Portugal in the quarter-final, before honorably losing to France in the semi-finals.

The Atlas Lion’s World Cup journey is still not over as they face Croatia this afternoon (at  16:00 Moroccan time) in the third-place playoff  at the Khalifa International Stadium.
