Israel’s President Isaac Herzog had similarly taken to twitter to celebrate Morocco’s quarter final win over Portugal.
“I congratulate His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people for the historic achievement in the World Cup…Congratulations!” Herzog twitted.
Several Israeli officials, including the Minister of Regional Cooperation Issawi Frej, joined the president in congratulating Morocco.
“We thought for a moment that we have reached the climax, but the Moroccan national team proved today that there are no limits to what is possible in a team that cannot be broken,” he said.
Morocco’s historic achievement–becoming the first African and Arab-speaking country to reach the world cup semi-finals–sparked jubilant celebrations among Palestinians, Israelis and people all over the world.
According to convergent news reports, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian revelers who were celebrating Morocco’s victory and beat them with batons.
“In response to the public display of joy, Israeli police officers in the Damascus Gate area beat Palestinians with batons, while some chased down the revelers,” reported the New Arab.
Meanwhile, Moroccan football fans showed their support for the Palestinian cause by displaying a sizable “Free Palestine” banner in the stadium during Morocco’s match against Belgium.
The Atlas Lions were also featured on the front page of India’s largest newspaper, The Times of India. The newspaper’s headline, “Football’s Arab Spring: This time for Africa,” emphasized the historic significance of Morocco’s World Cup triumphs for both the Arab World and Africa.
