Rabat – A survey conducted by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo found that 68.3% of FC Barcelona fans approve of the club’s potential signing of Moroccan footballer Azzedine Ounahi.
Over 4,000 fans thought the player would be a good addition to the Catalan club’s squad, while 31.7% –nearly 2,000 respondents– disapproved of the signing.
Spanish media reported earlier this week that FC Barcelona had their eyes on the midfielder, who has been put on the radar of several big European clubs after showing “outstanding tactical awareness” and “dribbling skills” at the 2022 World Cup.
Following Morocco’s round of 16 game with Spain, which saw the Atlas Lions progress after a penalty shootout, Spanish manager Luis Enrique –who previously coached Barcelona– expressed amazement at Ounahi’s performance.
“I was pleasantly surprised by the number 8. I’m sorry, I don’t remember his name,” he said at the post-game press conference. “How did this guy get here, my God? He excelled at his game. He surprised me. Hakimi, Ziyech, En-Nesyri, and Amrabat, too, but him… What a long run, how worn out must he be!”
Mundo Deportivo previously reported that the Catalan side is looking at transfer options to strengthen their midfield, but the club’s precarious economic situation might not allow it to sign heavy-hitters like Portuguese Bernardo Silva and German Ilkay Gundogan.
Ounahi’s club, Angers SCO, currently sits last in the rankings of France’s top-flight football league, but with him gaining widespread praise at the world’s biggest football stage, a move to a bigger club could be on the horizon.
Morocco reached the semi-finals in the 2022 World Cup after eliminating Spain and Portugal, becoming the first Arab and African country to do so. They will face reigning champions France on Wednesday, with a hope to continue the Atlas Lions’ historic run.
